Signage Preservation

Typography is all around but most of us are blind to its importance. It influences our daily decisions from the shampoo we buy to the local café to lunch in. it manages to conjure the mood and atmosphere of a location through street and shop signage. Typography also follows trends, just the same as clothing, music or decor. This unfortunately means a massive collection of great typography and lettering examples are lost due to upgrading or business closure - One sign is removed and replaced by another or simply painted over and erased forever.

The rise of different social media avenues means there’s more and more ways of preserving these aging gems before they’re lost forever. I’ve recently taken a shine to the Instagram app - It’s a great way to compile a lifestyle log through pictures alone. And now there’s a fab wee website called WLT World, where you can share your local signage and typography examples with the world through Instagram. WLT Wold compiles all the pictures you post and pins them to a virtual map of the world.

Simply snap your lettering example and type #wlt or #welovetype with your geotagging enabled, and you’ve shared your local examples with the rest of the type-geeks in the world.

Here’s a few of my favourites so far...

Willys Knight Service Station

Take a wee look at their website for some more great examples :: http://welovetypography.com/world
